Here is a video about a new product that a company in Mason TX has started to develop. It is a Block similar to a cinder block that can be used in building. The new greenstar blox contain 65% recycled paper and lottery tickets. The blocks are twice as strong as cinder blocks and are water, mold, fire and termite proof. They only weigh 1/3 as much as a cinder block and they make buildings incredibly efficient. Check out the video. I think products like this are really exciting

I just received an email about this film being released in December. This should be a great film. I first met the filmmakers when I was working with Charlie on a studio recording and they were begining the documentary process. About a year and a half later they contacted me and I transcribed a bunch of the video interviews with Keith Jarrett, Pat Metheny, Charlie, Joe Lovano, Ethan Iverson, Carla Bley, Steve Swallow, Ravi Coltrane and more. I am excited to see how the film turns out. I was happy to be involved in all of this stuff because I was able to see 30-90 minute interviews with all of the above named people. Within the movie, they can only use soundbytes and short stories but they were all really interesting, especially the int. with Keith Jarrett because he talked a lot about one of my favorite groups; Keith, Charlie, Paul Motian and Dewey Redman. From what I can tell, the film will premiere in conjunction with Charlies new album with his family and then it will be on a festival tour most of 09 and then released late 09 on DVD. I will let you know when I hear more about the film coming out.

Stevie Wonder - Superstition live on Sesame Street

Man, do you remember watching Sesame Street as a kid? I do. I havent seen it in a long time but I am sure it is different now. This is Stevie Wonder doing 7 minutes of Superstition. Hang in there so you can see them jamming out around 3:30-4:00. I am sure that they still have music on Sesame Street but I it is probably Hannah Montana or Paris Hilton lipsyncing to their “music” for 2 and a half minutes before a blatant plug for their new CD. Here is a good opinion article that answers the question, “How many bales of hay can fit in a Prius?” In my prius, the most I have had was my upright bass and amp, guitar and amp, saxophone and a few backpacks, a few music stands, a saxophone player, a guitar player and myself. Here is a podcast of a show that I played on with Bruce and Steve which I really enjoyed. It is an informal discussion/live in studio performance. This is one of my favorite groups to play with and I got to meet John Aielli who is a well known radio host in Austin, which I listen to most mornings. We are playing music writen by Doug Hall who was a wonderful piano player/composer/dear friend that passed away early this year from complications dealing with brain cancer.

We are performing this Saturday July 19, 2008 at Central Market on Lamar in Austin TX. The performance is a benefit concert to raise money for Doug Hall’s family. We are opening for the Doug Hall Tribute Band which includes Doug’s brother Bruce Hall on drums, John Hebert on bass, Randy Zimmerman on trombone, Sam Lipman on sax and Bruce Saunders, guitar and arrangements. We will open at 6:30 and there will be music until 9pm. If you are in the area, please check it out. Otherwise listen to the podcast and let me know what you think.

This is a snippet of an unreleased Stevie Wonder song from the 70’s. It is incredible. I wish the whole song was released. Remember that feeling you got when you heard Fullfillingness’ First Finale? This gives you a piece of that but not a big enough piece. Its cruel…maybe you shouldn’t listen…but if you do, I bet you listen to it over and over again and think about how someone has the whole track but is keeping it to themselves…Welcome to my madness.

I heard some news last night that makes me extremely sad. Dave Carpenter passed away on 6/24/08 from some sort of heart failure. He was only 48 years old.

Dave was a awesome bass player and a really great composer. He was a teacher of mine but mostly a great inspiration. He gives me something to reach for because his playing is truly amazing. If you havent heard much of Dave’s playing start paying more attention. He played on tons of TV and movie soundtracks including Oceans Eleven and Mr. 3000. As far as jazz, I would check out the trio records with Peter Erskine and Alan Pasqua especially “Live at Rocco” and to hear some great electric playing get Allan Holdsworth Trio “Sixteen Men of Tain”.

I will remember the times that I spent with “Carp” fondly and I hope that others will continue to discover his music.
